Artist: Stuart Haygarth
Location: Jerwood Dance House, Ipswich
The £8.9M Jerwood DanceHouse on Ipswich’s regenerated waterfront provides a permanent home for DanceEast – the dance development agency for the East of England. It is one of the growing number of centres for dance globally that have been created to reach out to communities and act as magnets for national and international dance artists.
Commissions East, working with DanceEast, appointed artist Stuart Haygarth to create a theatrical centrepiece for the atrium of this ambitious new arts venue. Stuart’s work played with the idea of dance, taking the form of a chandelier made from ballet tutus covering a colour spectrum from c hampagne, through peach and apricot, to strawberry. An imposing five metres high and two and a half metres across, the chandelier provides a bold focal point for the space.
